Free Owl pillow pattern

Use any colors/color changes you want in your owl. Personalize this pattern by making eyes smaller or bigger, using any number of colors, stitches, etc … My goal is to make them whimsical. I sell these on my etsy shop: Hooked on Whimsy.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn of choice: main color, contrasting color, white and black (for eyes), and orange for feet and beak. (I Love this Yarn is my favorite)

Fiberfill (I like Fairfield)

Size F or G hook. If you tend to have loose stitches, use the smaller hook for tighter stitches. (Gauge is not crucial to this pattern.)

Yarn needle

Instructions:

Front and back starts with ch 2, join together to form ring, ch 2 (does not count as first st throughout), 12 dc in ring, join with slip stitch on top st of first dc. (or can use magic circle, ch 2, 12 dc in ring) (12)

Rd 2 – ch 2, 2 dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join with slip stitch on top of first dc.

Rd 3 – ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st] around. Join with slip stitch on top of first dc.

Continue pattern in this fashion until you complete round 11 (you can go larger, if you like) — [dc in 9 st, 2 dc in next st] around. Join. Fasten off.

For front, use contrasting color and change color as desired for symmetry as shown in photo.

For back, main color is used throughout.

Eyes, follow through Rd 3 as above with white (or desired color), join. Fasten off, leaving long strand for sewing onto body.

Make pupils as above but use black throughout for only Rd 1 and Rd 2. Fasten off, leaving sufficient strand for sewing onto eyes.

Attach to whites.

Beak, ch 10 with a beak-like color (eg. Red Heart Super Saver Carrot). 1 tr in 4th chain from hook. 1 dc in next stitch, 1 hdc in each of next two stitches, 1 sc in each of next two stitches, and slip stitch in remaining stitch. Fasten off with long piece for sewing onto body.

Feet (make two sets) – follow similar to beak, in one piece.

Set one:

Talon one: ch 8, tr in fourth ch from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in final ch.

Do not fasten off.

Talon two: follow same pattern as beak. ch 10. 1 tr in 4th chain from hook. 1 dc in next stitch, 1 hdc in each of next two stitches, 1 sc in each of next two stitches, and slip stitch in remaining stitch.

Do not fasten off.

Talon three. the last talon is identical to first – ch 8, tr in fourth ch from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in final ch.

Fasten off, leaving long strand for sewing onto body.

Sew eyes, beak and talons onto front of body.

When front and back are completed, weave in all ends prior to proceeding.

Using a strand each of main color and a contrasting color of your choice attached front and back, front sides facing out, using dc. As you get closer to complete attachment, gently stuff the rounds to your desired fill. Complete dcs until join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
